Errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
(EE) Error compiling keymap (server-0)
(EE) XKB: Couldn't compile keymap
-------------------------------- end log
The following is what you told the other user.
The errors above are causing your problem. Sounds like your keymap is
b0rked. Can you try setting the us layout instead of fi in xorg.conf to
see if that changes anything?
I don't know what using the us layout did for the other user, but I was
using the us layout to begin with and am getting what appear to be the
identical log and xkbset errors with the exception:
> Warning: Type "ONE_LEVEL" has 1 levels, but <RALT> has 2 symbols >
Ignoring extra symbols
was NOT present in my kdm.log
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xkbset q
XKB not supported for display :0.0
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xkbset exp =m
XKB not supported for display :0.0
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$
I'm reporting it here because I tried searching using some of the kdm.log
error messages as a search term and found them connected with this bug...
since I've got almost identical error messages and an identical xkbset failure.
My problem is not only that xkbset doesn't work, but I've still got the
missing key problem I reported in:
Bug#481262: Info received (Bug#481262: Info received (xorg: does not read
control keys or numlock or capslock keys with nvidia driver))
What happens now is that it works for a period ranging from minutes to
hours, then the keys disappear.
I can clear the failure temporarily by:
$ setxkbmap us
However, I'd rather unb0rk the keyboard with the correct fix or at least a
workaround that'll work until the next upgrade. I write for money and
suddenly losing part of the keyboard *really* disrupts my train of thought.
Particularly because in the last upgrade, I lost several keys on the
Windows VM in VMware Server (arrow keys, Insert - Home - End (remapped to
Start button) - Delete - PgUp/PgDn) and I'd like to have my host working
with full-time working keys before I try to fix it in the VM. I know that
there was an xserver-xorg-video-vmware upgrade in that batch, but after
trying a manual downgrade, I couldn't get it to work at all, so I restored
everything as it was.
