It's unlikely that this will happen, as setup_harddisks is about to be obsoleted.
A new disk setup tool is on the way (search for setup storage in the wiki and mailing list archive), currently being tested, and it will be better coded and have support for many missing things.
I believe you should look at setup storage, test it, see if it works for you and supports your needs. If the thing you propose here is missing in it, too, talk with Michael Tautschnig about how to get your patch here rewritten to fir into setup storage.
