Yes, it is not unusable for everyone, but in my humble opinion it should be considered a release blocker in any case. It not makes sense to release Lenny with this bug, because any person who owns a recent laptop would be obliged to working with kernel code, not a simple thing. Did you imagine a slightly-power user (not a complete newby) to remove a kernel patch? The temptation to switch to Ubuntu or, worse, to Windows will became more and more higher.
