The h4cc program is needed to compile tools such as the h4toh5 conversion program also provided by the HDF Group at http://hdf.ncsa.uiuc.edu/h4toh5/.
Note that h5cc is included in the hdf5-tools package, but can't be used in the place of h4cc.
