The command pkg-config fontconfig --libs --static yields only "-lfontconfig -lexpat" when it should additionally include "-lfreetype". This is because the file /usr/lib/pkgconfig/fontconfig.pc is missing a "Requires:" line. (Or perhaps it should be Requires.private - I am not sure.) This problem also breaks autoconf files that use PKG_CHECK_MODULES to find dependencies for libcairo also; This is because the link order of freetype and fontconfig is not correctly specified.
