Sorry for my screwup. I just beat you to following up on the bug report.
According to bugzilla.samba.org, this 'bug' will not be fixed and is
caused by share names longer than 12 characters. They do not work for
'older' clients and somehow are not exported even when I do `smbclient
-L servername' with a 3.0.14a installation. Why this behaviour is
changed from 3.0.2a to 3.0.4 is beyond me. Anyway, this seems important
enough to add to README.Debian because this may confuse some samba
installations when upgrading from woody to sarge.
