I too am affected by this bug. Since it makes the package basically unusable (the main script will only work when specifying the new '--git-export=INDEX' option), I have upgraded the severity to grave. The fix is simple, remove the () from the end of options.treeish() on line 220 of /usr/bin/git-buildpackage. I have done this manually myself and have experienced no problems.
