hmm. i don't really agree with you here...

...because you can do that anyway: igal only copies the template files 
if there are none where you build your gallery. 
furthermore, igal does -as per manual page- look for your 
preferred templates in ~/.igal.

also the main templates are limited enough that few people would use 
them out-of-the-box, so why make them config files that don't 
fit most needs and need tinkering on a per-gallery basis anyway?

please supply me with a slightly more convincing reason and i'll
think about that again; as of now i won't make the templates config files.

true, but igal is fundamentally non-html-clean, mostly dead upstream and
i'm /really/ not keen on rewriting it. nevertheless i'll have a look at that
item and see what i can do. 
there's also llgal (not in the main archive though), an effort by an 
ex-igal user which seems to be based on igal's ideas but cleaner.
