I've actually been considering a related project which would marry
various geographic centroids (cities, US ZIP codes, et cetera) with
the published coordinates for METAR stations to find the closest
match based on proximity. I've already discussed the formulae and
potential data sources with a GIS friend of mine, but it will have
to wait for me to have some more spare time on my hands first.
My hope was that the examples section would have cleared up my
otherwise obtuse explanations in the manpage, though.

I completely agree, which is the direction I'm going with the fix
proposed for bug 379102 (thus merging now).
