I've encountered the same problem, but I've discovered that if googleearth is run from a command line, it works fine. Just launching from the Gnome->Internet->Google Earth launcher (or copies thereof) cause the server login to fail.
Using Wireshark, I've noticed that when launched from a launcher, Googleearth does not make any attempt to contact its server. I've also discovered that when the "Run in terminal" option on the launcher is checked, Googleearth will work when launched from the launcher. Haven't figured precisely why googleearth works when started in a terminal and not when started from a launcher, though. At least there's a workaround. I'm using the amd64 version of Debian, too.
