This bug is causing the problems described in #475959 and #468745.
I have run into this problem with the debian 2.6.24 kernel across
multiple architectures (i686 and amd64). Support for a generic RTC has
been hard compiled into the kernel instead of being compiled as a
module. This generic RTC support does not work with all motherboards
and does not support the new /proc/sys/class/rtc interface. All other
RTC clock modules will fail to work, including those needed for proper
system operation because the RTC is perpetually busy due to the generic
RTC module being hard compiled into the kernel and thus is unloadable.
As seen in the kernel log below 'modprobe rtc_cmos' fails due to a busy
code.
This bug MUST be fixed if this kernel is to be releaseed with lenny,
because many cmos hardware clocks in intel based motherboards are
incompatible with the generic rtc code compiled into the kernel. In
those instances hwclock will fail to work without the --directisa
option.
I have fixed this problem by recompling the kernel with following
changes to the kernel config file.
