Hi debhelper maintainer, I was led to this bug (#448094) after discovering that a call to dh_icons inserted into the build of my package, which has an XPM-format icon, does not generate a postinst calling update-icon-caches. Please consider this email as another request asking for a bugfix, for whatever that may be worth.
Just in case it's helpful to mention, the source code gtk/updateiconcache.c (in gtk+2.0 source package) for gtk-update-icon-cache, of which update-icon-caches is a wrapper, specifically tests for files ending with the extensions .png .svg .xpm and .icon. best regards, -- Kevin B.
