This is the correct behaviour, but it is not what I get. Are you sure you're not getting a non-Debian version of texmacs or axiom? What happens when you run 'axiom -noclef' and enter '1+1'? Indeed, this is my mistake: I used the source I got from 'apt-get source', which is not the patched source.
