I actually took (stole?) code from usplash to reset the console back to text
mode (so called 'mode setting'). I have not committed the code yet, and I
don't think I'll since you found an alternate way to get around this minor
problem.

We still need the console in text mode though, because suspend fails for
some users. I can show you the code if you care to make it work.
