Especially with KDE, HAL do not mount pendrives. I receive this message:
"mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdc1,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so"

This is very likely a problem of KDE passing incorrect mount flags to hal.

With dmesg:
FAT: Directory bread(block 523) failed
scsi 5:0:0:0: rejecting I/O to dead device
FAT: Directory bread(block 524) failed
scsi 5:0:0:0: rejecting I/O to dead device

Maybe just a broken partition table. You you check the partition table with (c)fdisk and if possible repartition and reformat the drive.

Cheers,
