Seems this behaviour was there but reverted long time ago in commit f48836f8589e17fabed7bddcc402422b394e1820, which at the same time introduced the --forget-old-unavail option. I don't see much point in that change, something which can be done automatically is relegated to manual intervention by the user (or the need for frontends to use that option). I think I'll revert the part related to forget-old-unavail and reintroduce the automatic removal of purged entries from status.
