Okay, I've done more testing and barring a freeze situation I haven't encountered yet, I'd say lenny qemu works with 98se. Since ubuntu 7.10 was also experiencing the issues with the qemu I was using before all this, I will try it again. I suspect that the problem appeared sometime after the version of qemu in lenny. If it's not linux-host specific, upstream may be in for a nasty shock when people really start to use 0.9.1.
