There was no video driver set in the totem config. I wasn't running full-screen at all.
However, I can no longer reproduce the bug with totem-xine or totem-gstreamer, running in full-screen mode or not. I haven't done any upgrades since I installed totem-gstreamer a couple of days ago. totem-xine with the xshm video driver explicitly set makes the video really dark, which makes me think totem-xine doesn't use the xshm video driver by default on my system. xine with xshm set does not have this problem though.
