This situation shouldn't happen in the real world, > after all: who would want to manually upgrade ONLY gnokii-common? It was only to showcase the problem. Doing "upgrade" would do more than I want. So far "install" has worked just fine for single package upgrades. >> Now I do: >> >>> $ apt-cache show xgnokii | grep Depends >>> Depends: gnokii-common (= 0.6.24.dfsg-1), [&] >>> $ apt-cache show gnokii-cli | grep Depends >>> Depends: dialog, gnokii-common (= 0.6.24.dfsg-1), [&] >>> Pre-Depends: adduser > > I'm not sure I understand what you mean, but I don't think that's a > problem. Both xgnokii and gnokii-cli depend on gnokii-common EXACLY with version 0.6.24.dfsg-1. Upgrading the latter to 0.6.24.dfsg-2 obviously makes this dependency break, so both xgnokii and gnokii-cli have to be removed. You may want to specify "Depends: gnokii-common (>= 0.6.24.dfsg-1).
