Ehrm, you're right. Should have double checked before posting.

The point about ucf is still valid though.
Personally, I wouldn't start trying to parse the (locally modified)
configuration file (because that is to error prone imho). I'd generate
the configuration file as before and simply use ucf to detect and
preserve local modifications (which basically behaves as dpkg conffileS
then).
