I removed ipw3945d, which was still trying to run and failing because I've switched to iwl3945 driver, but this line remains the same. The behavior did change slightly in that the network did not try to configure after boot (resource temporarily unavailable), but waited until I logged in and chose my wireless network, although it still ran my iptables script, which of course screwed it up and caused all kinds of weird log messages as avahi went nuts and tried to send DNS requests through lo and eth1. Now for some reason it is trying to start network services and do DHCP at boot again. Is there some package doing that which I should remove? The behavior is the same under the stock 2.6.24-686-1 kernel. NM never worked when I used ipw3945, instead then I had to go to Gnome > System > Administration > Network to turn it on by hand, but it worked reliably.
