You could changed the 'Enabled for Asian languages' checkbox in 'Tools->Options->Language Settings->Languages' TabPage to checked or not. If this checkbox is checked and 'Enable char unit' CheckBox in 'Tools->Options->OpenOffice.org->General' TabPage is checked. Then whatever the local language is, the ruler unit is character unit. If the local language don't belong to Asian languages. And if the 'Enabled for Asian languages' checkbox in 'Tools->Options->Language Settings->Languages' TabPage is not checked, the default unit is Inch. And you can select any type of unit from type list of rulers or from the 'Measurement unit' ListBox in 'Tools->Options->OpenOffice.org->General' TabPage as youself default config unit. Cheers Amelia
