Would you be willing to try out latest 5.4.x SVN upstream? There's a dedicated upstream fix for this problem (in SVN) and we'd be interested to know whether it fixes the problems for you.
You could either build your own from http://www.net-snmp.org/nightly/tarballs/ or try a binary snapshot package from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/net-snmp/Debian_Etch/ .
