It is quite understandable this wishlist exists. So I am adding this information here so people can have their wish without waiting for this to be solved by ifupdown package. Solution: install ifmetric package. This package runs ifmetric command as hook script and does what is needed aposteori. This package does not require any modification to the existing packages.
