The problem is that josm needs to be launched with Sun's JVM, and freezes with Gij and (in my experience) many other free VMs. You can use JOSM anyway, until the bug is solved, installing sun-java5-bin and entering the command: JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun josm The second part of the bug (messages about missing icons) is another minor issue, refer to bug #472305.
