After further discussion on the vserver IRC channel it appears there are two ways of handling ip addresses, a netlink way (which is the direction the software is moving) and an alias way. This problem is only present (apparently) in the alias version, which now require explicit configuration in, os a solution would be to simply remove the config option for this when building. Apparently the alias can be up to 15 characters (i.e. 10 from the name of the vserver) but ifconfig only displays 8 or 9 of them. Of so says Doener of the IRC.
