During that time, top shows excessive amount of context switches (tens

I wonder if you don't have a problem somewhere else: I tried on my
machine, home, and I don't even get one more cs per second when I launch
and use freecol. However, I did notice that, compared to work, I get
much more context switches on my home computer than here, which I
attributed to my video card.
Could you be more precise: is it really linked to freecol (the number
of cs really changes noticeably ?) ?
Yes, definitely. You can even see the difference between idling while you
are contemplating over cities' wealth, and doing the move, when the cs
count rises from ~100 to ~10000.
Could you try another graphical
Java application and check if that shows the problem (with the same
OK, I tried worldwind and it shows the same behaviour.

be Sun 6) ?
It is Sun Java 6. (icedtea crashes here)
Could you try to purge sun's java and reinstall it ? (I'm thinking it
might be due to local java configuration, but I'm not sure).
I tried that, without success.
