Many upgrades have passed in my Sid system, and I tried again in this matter. The problem is still there, but I found a possible workaround.
Assume my Canon G3 is switched off. When I connect the camera via USB, the status LED switches to green. When issuing the first command (e.g. gphoto2 -l), the status LED goes (and stays) orange, but the command is carried out ok. Any following command fails with the above stated error message, until switching off the camera and reconnecting it.
