I can reproduce the behavior that you describe, but i think i'd
describe it differently. It seems to me that what's happening is that
the ASCII dump only displays if the terminal is wide enough to
accomodate the entire thing (instead of truncating the right side).
Similarly, you can't set the width to be wider than the terminal
supports (try setting the width to 1024 with ^X w "1024" -- you'll see
"width reduced to XX to fit on the screen"). This doesn't seem like a
bug or a misfeature to me, though i suppose it could be a little bit
better documented.
Would you like to propose a change to the man page that would make
this behavior less surprising? Or some text that should show in the
message area?
