xpdf displays page numbers as physical page numbers (that is the first page it displays is always '1' the next '2' and so on) even if there is page numbering information present in the PDF file. It would be nice if used the in-file page number as well as this would make it easier to make sense of in-file contents pages and references. I'm afraid I'm not sure how this information is represented, but evince: ii evince 0.4.0-5 Document (postscript, pdf) viewer presents the information like this: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~jdamery/evince-page-numbers.png so the evince code might be a good place to look for suggestions. The file I'm displaying there is the USB 2.0 specification which can be downloaded from http://www.usb.org/developers/docs/ however I'm sure that other files much have this information in.
