I was unable to reproduce your bug with a 2.6.23.9 custom kernel on a
Mobility X600. Maybe you could send me your .config, but I have only
little hope.
Alternatively some people claim 8.03 solves this issue (coming soon in
Debian as 8.47.3-1). Let me know if it works for you.
If we are still unable to fix your problem, it means this is a bug in
the compiled module provided by ATI/AMD, and therefore we could file a
bug report on AMD Customer care.
