Indeed, this is an ironical situation. I do not feel that I have enough background in the field to take the final decision, especially that I encountered that bug by chance, but am not using .fig files anymore. Also, I see that imagemagick suggests gs, so recommending transfig would somehow go against some previous choice of the maintainer. If available, I would simply follow his opinion.
