Michael, I, for one, do not need to set the parameter clocksource=pit anymore (currently: kernel 2.6.24-1-686). Note that I still have hal version 0.5.9.1-2 on the machine in question (because any higher hal version does not work for me with gphoto2, see my bug report #462447).
