Thanks for the quick response. I've got Exim configured to defer mail if it can't talk to clamd, and I switched to supervised mode when a clamd crash caused mail to stop working. Although the init.d/clamav-daemon support for this mode is ad-hoc it is handy and I was pleased to find it there when I went to make this switch. (I'd thought I was going to have to switch it to run under daemontools' supervise.)
