Thanks for the (well researched) report!  I must confess that I am
pretty much dependent on upstream for a proper fix (to which end I am
glad to see you already commented on the matter on STR #1716).
However, upon consideration, I would indeed be willing to revert the
fix for STR #1716 as an interim solution, particularly if I can
arrange to keep it in place for regular single-buffered windows.  (I'd
rather reinstate an old bug that has evidently not been too big a deal
than introduce a regression relative to 1.1.7.)

I don't have time to study the code at the moment, but I ought to be
able to upload at least a crude fix within the week.
