Hey, you released the thing! :)

Why would I think 2.9.6 is any more stable?  Does its mkfs lay out
allocation groups nicely on small filesystems for example?  ;)

This is not exactly a common problem, so I'd be more inclined to let
this one get fixed in the natural progression of things (next Debian
release will have something newer even than 2.9.6 most likely, with
this fixed and perhaps some exciting new corner-case issues to bite
people).
