No that doesn't affect anything, the compressed option was broken in 1.3
and has been replaced with gzip compression instead of our own compression 
scheme.

1.3.18 is a release candidate for our next stable release (1.4) and is 
known to be incompatible with 1.2.x. So IMO it does make sense to upload
it in unstable since I'd like to see 1.4(.x) in Lenny.

Your savegame was from 1.2.8 which is incompatible with 1.3.18. The game
should have shown an error message instead of crashing. Unfortunately
there was a bug in this code which caused the crash. This has been fixed
upstream.
