My locale is "fr_FR.UTF-8" except for LC_MESSAGES which I set to "C" to read the original error messages (and report more accurate bugs). Now, vim-gnome displays in English, while the desktop itself (Gnome) and other GTK+ application are still in French. My locale configuration: LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8 LC_CTYPE="fr_FR.UTF-8" LC_NUMERIC="fr_FR.UTF-8" LC_TIME="fr_FR.UTF-8" LC_COLLATE="fr_FR.UTF-8" LC_MONETARY="fr_FR.UTF-8" LC_MESSAGES=C LC_PAPER="fr_FR.UTF-8" LC_NAME="fr_FR.UTF-8" LC_ADDRESS="fr_FR.UTF-8" LC_TELEPHONE="fr_FR.UTF-8" LC_MEASUREMENT="fr_FR.UTF-8" LC_IDENTIFICATION="fr_FR.UTF-8" LC_ALL= So LC_ALL would not be enough to determine the preferences of a user. I thought it was a shortcut for setting LC_*. When I call «LC_ALL="fr_FR.UTF-8" gvim», the menus, etc. are back in French.
