Okay, I have duplicated this problem. I'm not sure what's going on, but
the binary for amd64 in etch seems to be broken.

There are no relevant changes to the source between -11 and -12, so I
assume that something was broken about the compile in etch.

If you run:

    apt-get source -b gtimer

on your etch system to download the source package from etch and rebuild
it, does the resulting Debian package work correctly? If so, I can
request that the stable release managers just rebuild the existing source
of gtimer in etch for the next point release.
