As Thomas already mentioned, diffstat should already do what you ask... can you provide a reproduceable example of this failing? I suppose an explicit option might be useful for filenames without the usual suffix, however, or perhaps to process compressed data through a pipe. But I can't imagine either of these scenarios to be very common, and in any event the workaround is rather straightforward.
