The application I’m planning to install (gnome2-globalmenu-applet) does but most
of the other applets depend on libpanel-applet2-0.

I can understand this, but xfce-xfapplet DOES provide something like gnome-panel
after all. I don’t know how perfect the emulation is, but pretty much every
applet which works in gnome-panel should also work with xfce-xfapplet. (Yeah, I
know you know.)
