So there appears to be a lot more packages to build, but would it be
possible to run a (small) server configuration with the current packages
only? Most components of the server are optional, and that could let us
sort out real issues before the system gets too complex.

I could perhaps help packaging something, although my time is also
limited. I am interested in getting a minimal server running if
possible. (However I don't deal in cdbs [1].)
