I agree, from your description this looks like a bug which absolutely should be fixed. I've noted it, and expect it to be fixed in the next upstream release. I might provide a backport of the fix in the Debian package, but probably not, as the time's up for changes in Sarge, and the new upstream release will definetively make it to Etch.
