You can help fixing the problem by pinpointing which software component
that actually solve the problem.

Something is obviously different between sarge and lenny. The question
which package that needs to be fixed...

libc, nfs-common, portmap, libnfsidmap2 or something else.

The problem is obviously not in the kernel as the same kernel is used.
