Did you upgrade php5-ldap? That's the only non-standard extension that
phpldapadmin uses.

Yes, it was upgraded with the others. Though incidentally, I have just
installed the following packages:

2008-02-10 21:47:58 status installed apache2-utils 2.2.8-1
2008-02-10 21:48:09 status installed apache2.2-common 2.2.8-1
2008-02-10 21:48:12 status installed apache2-mpm-prefork 2.2.8-1
2008-02-10 21:48:12 status installed apache2 2.2.8-1
2008-02-10 21:48:12 status installed defoma 0.11.10-0.2
2008-02-10 21:48:13 status installed libgeoip1 1.4.4.dfsg-1
2008-02-10 21:48:14 status installed libsnmp-base 5.4.1~dfsg-6
2008-02-10 21:48:15 status installed libsnmp15 5.4.1~dfsg-6
2008-02-10 21:48:15 status installed libwbxml2-0 0.9.2-4
2008-02-10 21:48:15 status installed libwbxml2-dev 0.9.2-4
2008-02-10 21:48:15 status installed libwbxml2-utils 0.9.2-4
2008-02-10 21:48:15 status installed snmp 5.4.1~dfsg-6
2008-02-10 21:48:15 status installed debconf-i18n 1.5.19
2008-02-10 21:48:21 status installed debconf 1.5.19
2008-02-10 21:48:28 status installed man-db 2.5.1-2
2008-02-10 21:48:37 status installed console-data 2:1.05-1
2008-02-10 21:48:43 status installed snmpd 5.4.1~dfsg-6

..and now phpldapadmin works. I guess this means a dependency in some of the
packages involved is all that is needed?
