OK, I've now tried gdb-trunk and gdb-6.5 on both Etch and Lenny. Both gdb's fail to detect ObjC files on Lenny yet succeed on Etch. Therefor it seems that gdb proper is not responsible for the issue and this bug report most likely belongs to a different package.
Since the gcc packages in Lenny have been updated since the report I rebuilt the ObjC code. Yet to no avail. Next I'll try to test some older versions of GCC to try to identify the culprit as time permits.
But I'd like to keep this bug report open until we can point to the real issue (and a new bug report).
