Hi, it works fine for me on powerpc with version 1.5.3.8-1 in unstable,
can you please re-check with this version?

 $ git version
 git version 1.5.3.8
 $ git svn init http://gnuradio.org/svn/gnuradio/trunk
 Initialized empty Git repository in .git/
 $
