wait, but the volumes must also be mounted when the user logs onto the
console or virtual terminal, not just w/ gdm, so how is that supposed to
work?

yes, but this means there are two options: 1) I convert my old scripts
and then nobody can log in, or 2) I don't convert the scripts and then
all users w/ volumes can't log in. this breaks the system either way as
far as I can see.
