Consequent to your e-mail I examined this a little further---so I am re-evaluating. Until the world switches over to unicode ... I think it should certainly be possible to choose to use a set of fonts that does not use unicode for latin characters. So I am upgrading the bug to "normal". Eitan may soon provide the possibility of latin fonts as an option thereby causing this problem to disappear. I am trying my hand at a solution as well.
