Yes, that works.  Thanks for the tip.

This behaviour is not obvious. It's described in the man page, but you
have to read it carefully to notice that it's *packages* which need to
be listed, not binary files.

Would it be possible to add an extra sentence to /etc/mailcap.order
underlining this? Something like:

#  Mailcap.order:  This file allows a system-wide override of MIME
program
#  preferences.  See the mailcap.order(5) man page for more information.
#  Note that the Debian package (as found in /usr/lib/mime/packages/)
must
#  be listed here, not the binary executable which it provides.
